Modified Gold Dollar

Seraphim What gssixgun does not mention in his wiki is that the tang is tapered. When you use the straight edge to measure the straightness of the blade you have to gauge both sides of the tang and average that to find the center line. The #1 picture is probably showing the one that is warped. --Jay

Yes.

I lay the razor on one side, and then the other, and it should be quite easy to see which way the tang is favoring.

Well, here's a thougtht, albeit a bit of a smart a$$ one... Keep the warped scales that you've replaced on vintage blades and use them on warped Gold Dollars. A warped Gold Dollar with some warped cracked ice Dubl Duck scales might be kind of cool. :D

BTW, I tried to straighten, in a vise, a Gold Dollar that had a bent tang. Guess I went too far... Snap, crackle, pop and I don't mean rice crispies. C'est la vie.

problem with my 66 was that it broke before it straightened... wonder if the steel was not hardened properly???

where did the blade break at and where on the blade was your fulcrum set?

I curious cause I'll be rescaling soon and would like to avoid shattering the razor if straightening is needed.

That's pretty much what my 208 did. I had just begun to tighten the vise and before I knew it, snap! Quite frankly that's what I was expecting it to do. However, if figured, if other folks have had success doing this, I might as well give it a try since it was unusable otherwise. Like I said, c'est la vie.

I've had success with that method on both a bengall and a jr torrey

Jeesh! Go easy there Hercules!:)

You really don't have to crank the beejeebers out of the vice to coerce the tang into submission.


It's not like tying it to the Rack.

I have tried straightening a blade and watched it flex but it just sprang back. I was afraid to use more deflection. I had better luck relieving the scale on the wide side where the cheeks of the tang press on the scale when it starts to enter. I also relieve the scale on the other side where the blade edge hits. On the type scale that responds to heat I put in a slight twist.
