4 months in started with 1, that same day became 2 now it's 20 straights. 3 safety's and 1 rolls razor. Can't help it I'm hooked. ( 14 shavable, still working on 6)
I started about 2 weeks ago, and I think I am at around 10 now...
Only a few are shave ready though.
I started June 2008, I have been very very choosy. I am up to 7 straights.
EDIT: Oh, and all are shave-ready, well used, and loved...
scott.
Started five weeks ago and already have four....
FA Claus Halberd 5/8
Joseph Allen 'Barber's Rattler' 6/8
Dovo Bismarck 6/8
Dixie Manufacturing 'the pippin' 5/8 (legacy razor)
I try not to think about it....
14 straights and too many DEs to count. Apparently I'm part ferret and these things are so shiny!!! :aargh:
Hmm, a dozen or two for straights and 6 DE... basically too much if you ask the good lady wife or not enough if you ask me ;)
I started building alot of razors - than I started selling them off
Reason being - I was feeling bad about not getting to shave with them as often as I liked. My eventual goal is to keep 6-7 in total use. Anything more (at present time) is too many. All are nice razors - just not getting enough show time. Plus the issues of keeping them from rusting or staining - the sleepless nights - oy.
of course if money was not an issue....Game on.:o
Over the past year I manged to collect exactly a dozen of razors which all are shave ready and all are in rotation. And one DE.
Lol it's like a razor anonomous forum!
I forgot to say that I've been using straights for about 3 weeks top ;)
Hello, my name is Michael and I haven't bought a straight razor for 96 hours :rofl2:
I've been using straights since around my join date
<--
For a long time, kept it to 7, then I upped it to 14 and now I've decided to allow myself 21. I think I have 20 for my personal rotation. That is shave ready keepers.
At any given moment, I have more than that. A bunch are junkers (but I'm not going to throw them out), and others are blades that I bought to see if I wanted to keep them. Or some I buy from pure RAD. I end up selling off any extras that don't make it into my own rotation. (At the moment I happen to have 10 freshly honed razors sitting out and waiting testing, only one is a keeper for certain.)
I just started getting interested in straight razors about 3 weeks ago. I got one at a yard sale and I wanted to learn about it, that's how I found Straight Razor Place, since then I've gotten 3 more. It's a very enjoyable hobby, but very addicting.
I am down to 7 now!!! Just right for a week!!!:D
Bought my first in April. I'm up to 3 that I use.
I have about two dozen in oil waiting to be restored...some people go to antique stores looking for nice razors. I go looking for the *%&^ they leave behind.
I started collecting when I was 21 back in 93 I think. The idea was to share it with nursing home residents as a part of a reminiscene group I did. (I'm a Recreational Therapist)...I got my first one a Clauss Freemont Razor, and I was hooked. I looked everywhere, and grabbed what I could. Back then though, unless you knew a barber that gave shaves and could teach it to you, it was extremely tough to find out how to shave for myself, so my interest 'half' died awayby 2000. Presently I own maybe 20 straight razors, which doesn't include a safety razor collection. Now that I've found this site, I'm kicking myself for not sticking to it back then...even in the 90's though, around here it was hard to find Case Razors...and my favorite then and mostly now is the Genco Easy Aces.
Update, you all got me to thinking, so I went searching in some boxes..uh-oh..okay so I have close to 40-50 of them...geez!
Now I need to research display cases because I really need one now...
Got up to 10, sold 3 to a new straight shaver(one of which gave him his first shave) and now back up to 9. Should have 10 again at the end of the month, something a little special......ok maybe big special :hmmm:.
Yeah, yeah I did the 7-14-21 BS too :D
That didn't help I was up to 77 shave ready in my collection
then I dropped to 50
I am probably back up to around 77 again...
That does not include the bottom drawer of "I might get to them someday razors" there has to be at least 50 in there....
Hi my name is Glen and I haven't bought a razor in 3 hours....
I have had about 75 pass through my hands in the last year and a half.
Presently I have four. BUT there are two in the wind that will be coming back to me as keepers. The number seven slot is reserved for a custom Bill Ellis. Then I should be done for a while.
My first straight razor was given to me 2 months ago, from my lady. I am now up to 15, two of those are in my current shaving rotation. One is being restored, by the man:D. One may not be able to be restored (hopefully the man can work his magic:D). The other 11 are waiting to be restored and are unusable at this time. I am also looking at purchasing 4 others soon.
Someone please cut up my credit card before the lady Kills me.
nate
:rofl2: It hurts more to think of the ones that get away
I have 11 str8s in my rotation;
J. A. Henckels, Frederick Reynolds, Wosty Pipe, 3 John Williams Damascus, Bengall, Joseph Allen & Sons Non-XLL, Royal Keen Kutter, Imperial, Genco Gold Seal.
6 others I'm working on that are near shave ready.
5 Gillette I don't use anymore;
1973 Trac II (bought new in 1974), 1930's Open Comb, 1955 Red Tip, 1959 fatboy adjustable, 1968 slim adjustable (the fatboy and slim are for the grandsons)
but I don't have RAD yet and hope I don't catch it, I hear there is no cure. Are you sure there isn't a salve you can apply..............
:lurk:
:borg:
Resistance is futile.
There is no escape.
:mace:
Just one for now.
I started in May, and was at some point (not too long ago) at 8 straights, mostly because I was trying out different blade grinds and widths. Have sold most and am now at 3 straights plus 2 Gem SE's on the way (for travelling or those days I sleep in and need a shave in a hurry ;-) Still planning on selling at least one of the current straights and 1 of the Gem's at a later stage.
:hmmm: Hmm
Right this minute:
14 in the rotation
1 that I'm not using, just keeping, because it was my Great-grandfather's.
4-5 on my wanted list
RAD? Naah :D
Four real straights. Double Duck Dwarf, Henckels 78 1/2, M & K Swedish #30, & an Electric Cutlery. Plus a Monsieur Charles injector blade straight.
I have four in rotation and about 40ish waiting to be restored.
I stopped keeping track. Maybe around 20.. I was up to around 25 but I sold a bunch.
I also have a Merkur 33c and a Gilette travel in the cute little brass box.
I'm in the process of "thinning the herd" to get down to a reasonable number. I've figured out the blade sizes and grinds that I like so anything that doesn't fit the bill will be moving on.
I have pictures of most of the blades in my signature.
Hmm. I was trying to keep to 30. I think I have around 40-50 in the shaving rotation. Got the custom bug lately. Added two Robert Williams, two Joe Chandler and a L.R. Harner to the lineup in the past couple of months. I have a good 100 razors go through the 'shop' in a year. Got to pay for those custom razors somehow, restoring old ones is a good way to do it. Now and then an exceptional vintage will find its way into the display case.
I try to justify it by only hanging onto unique razors. If I keep one, i sell one to take its place. Problem there, you eventually end up with all unique razors and dont want to sell off any. Then I build a bigger display case.
I just joined! I started collecting about 16 yeasr ago. I have well over 100. I havent counted. Probably more. When i first stated collecting them i thought about trying to shave. My dad said" what are you trying kill yourself ". I guess his father did the same to him over 30 years earlier. I continued to collect along the years. Reciently I have been entertaining the idea of trying.
I also have a rolls razor,4 de razors
I would have thought that most of the serious guys may have had 20-50 razors but I am surprised at how many have over 100!! my wife was reading this with me and laughed and said I thought you were crazy with 4! then she actually entertained the idea of me getting a few more so thanks to all you rad-a-holics for making my life easier!!...lol
Just started a couple of weeks and have 2 already. Just ordered 2nd brush.
Could this be RAD??:D
Glad to help with the wife! LOL!
I have around 20. I got a bunch through a couple of trades for some vintage fountain pens, which I also collect. Then I picked up a set of Naniwa stones and have kept an eye out for honing projects at antique stores. I am still trying to zero in on my favorite razor makers and types.
