I've seen a few Friodur's without "no-stain" identified ... are these stainless/no-stain? Or are there some carbon steel Friodur's out there. I assume from the name that the freeze/cold treatment implied in the name (Friodur) that all Friodur's are Stainless, but want to confirm.
There are many Henckels razors out there that are neither Friodurs, nor stainless.
But my understanding is that all Henckels Friodurs are stainless.
Yep. I'm fairly confident they are. The Friodur was the stainless range.
I wasn't that positive on it, I thought that Friodur meant Frozen temper but the "no-stain" stamp were SS Frozen temper...
I would like to know for sure though...
Here's a page from the Zwilling site. It relates to knives, but i guess the principles are the same.
They state.
"Freezing to -70°C.
Ice-hardening strengthens the corrosion resistance and thus protects better against rust."
That's as much info as i could find.
I read somewhere that cryo treatment for cutlery steel was mostly a stainless thing.
Well, I'm not sure about Friodurs but I had a Sub Cero, the Filarmonica cryo-treated blade I believe, that certainly wasn't VERY stainless, judging by all the stains that were on it (it was stored NEXT TO an Inox, which was pristine...). So maybe they did both, carbon and stainless?
Yeah I am pretty sure that "Frozen/Cyro/Sub Zero" doesn't just pertain to SS The DD Wonderedge is carbon too..... BUT that wasn't really the question here...

This is what give me a small element of doubt....
I'm clueless on this question. I can say that all of the Friodurs I've ever seen have been stainless but I am sure I haven't seen them all. :)
Don't know much about this, but here is an example of what i had read:
In most low-alloy steels, there is little or no difference achieved by cryo-treatment. This is because low-alloy steels do not retain austenite. Some bladesmiths indicate that if low-alloy steel has received good heat-treating, there will be nothing left for the cryogenic process to work with.

Hmmm ... Seems like I thought I was asking a noob question, that turned out to not be so noob after all. Thanks to all for weighing in. My question really comes from my desire to get a Friodur stainless ("no-stain"), and found a couple of Friodurs on ebay that were not specifically marked "no-stain", so didn't want to put out much money for something that wasn't what I wanted. Sooo ... now, maybe a follow-up question ... how else would you go about identifying a stainless blade ... especially without seeing it in person? I assume the answer here might be that there is not good way to do that ... but thought I'd see if the exceptionally creative minds on here might have an idea. I have not personally seen a stainless straight in person, but I assume I would be able to tell from looking at it in person, but not sure I could do so via a photo. Anything I could ask the seller, perhaps? Thanks again to everyone.
Not sure if you can tell stainless from non-stainless just by looking at it (assuming the blades are well cared for and in good shape). However, if you want a stainless Friodur, then simply restrict your purchase to a Friodur that is stamped "no stain" or "inox."
If a blade is stainless, it's stamped or marked in some way to indicate that it's stainless. Considering the marketing benefits, a company would be foolish not to advertise that their blade was stainless. The only scenario I could see where a stainless blade would not be indicated as stainless would be a vintage blade that was reconditioned to the point of erasing the "no-stain" indication.
