It is interesting. I've never owned such a razor so I haven't tried to shave with one. It would seem to me that the 'guard' would make it more likely that someone would nick themselves than not. Probably first time buyers would have been attracted to the 'safety' feature because if they had never shaved with a straight they would have an exaggerated idea of what a cut would be like.
