Welcome to SRP. If I'm not mistaken Mappin & Webb was a high end store like Abercrombie & Fitch. While they themselves didn't make the razors the stuff they had made with their marque was top shelf. I have one and it is a great razor. All those I've heard about from guys that have them are also wonderful shavers. Anyone is welcome to correct me if I'm wrong on them not actually making the razors.
Mappin & Webb Co. - old and great company, they made razors and many other types of cutlery.
Thanks for setting me straight Alex. I should have thought to take a look at your excellent website before I stuck my foot in my mouth. :gaah: I thought Mappin & Webb was sort of like Hoffritz but now instead of saying I was wrong once before I'll have to say I was wrong twice before ......:D
Get a M&W razor while you can! I own one and it is one of my best.
Mappin & Webb still exist. Their shop is on Regent St in London. I doubt they still have straights made for them, but I'll certainly have a look, next time I'm in the area.
This is only brandname. I was in this shop. By the end of the 1880s, Mappin Brothers was purchased by the Goldsmiths & Silversmiths Co. of London.
Do not buy a Mappin & Webb, especially if in good condition.
They are terrible. Worst shaver I ever used. Not worth anything. Rotten. You don't need one. Forget about it.........

I wanna save them all for ME!!!!!! When you find one in great condition, send it to me immediately!!!!!

Lol, your picture really reminds me of this guy:

I have three Mappins. One appears to be a reground wedge in Ivory that I think may have been part of a set (has an M on the back of the tang). The other two are an indentical pair in a nice little box. Mappins are top notch shavers from a "designer" company. Very nice if you can get one (or more...).
Is "Mappin Bros." the same company being talked about?
The reason I ask is that this company is also located on Regent St in London. 220 Regent I believe, but I've seen a box with their logo, and it doesn't look like the one posted under the SRP database for razors.
The one here is a Sun or an M with "Trustworthy" underneath it. The one I've seen on the box has a picture of 2 lions on either side of what looks like a vase.
Any thoughts or further information regarding the difference?
I believe first there was Joseph Mappin, then Mappin Bros, then Mappin & Webb, but I may have the order wrong.
Does the double Lion emblem sound about right? I've been trying to dig around the SRP database and google, and can't seem to find that emblem anywhere.
This is the one I'm talking about but can't find confirmation of it's authenticity anywhere.Attachment 48137
I don't think I've seen that one before, but that doesn't mean much - I've not seen all that many Mappins.
Yeah also upon further examination it looks like the "Lion" on the right is actually a Unicorn....lol
