So my mom knows I use straights and she bought me a Gillette fusion for christmas because it had a redskin symbol on it which is the team I like (I know they suck!) So I figured what the heck I'll go ahead and try it sence Iv never used a saftey razor and started with a straight and I didn't like using a saftey razor AT ALL! It didn't feel like I was shaving, it felt like I was rubbing plastic on my skin. It was uncomfortable. I'll stick with my straights :rant:
HAHAHA, I hear you man. My brother had to buy razor blades again last week. He says they burn like $&^% after about 4 shaves, but at $4 per cartridge he can't afford to change it as often as he needs to.

Be glad you didn't learn on one of those things. They teach bad habits like: Shave as fast as humanly possible while stripping the first layer of skin from your face.
Hey, why not make a special place for it in the bathroom as a decoration. It would look nice please her if she should happen to see it. After all it is your team.
It's kinda funny -- we all talk about how economical it is to shave with straights, but we end up spending small fortunes to support our respective Acquisition Disorders. I've spent enough money on razors, strops, hones, etc., to have purchased a large warehouse full of disposable blades.:rofl2:
Unfortunately, you're right >.> ... I quit using a Gillette Fusion 'cause the cartridges cost too much... In the first month or two, I'm down 150$ on razors, and 250$ on strops, then another 40$ to get some Castle Forbes samplers and a tub of TOBS. Not to mention a 20$ Amazon special Badger Brush... Aside from buying a few hones, I've managed to be pretty restrained. (I still look and think about getting more stuff, but then I find I can't justify it)
I only have 2 razors in operation - one I bought in an op shop and got honed. The other was my great grandfather's and I honed this one. Down the track I'm looking at making knives and having a go at making razors (just for fun and learning)- this also keeps me from buying more.
It is possible to save money with straights if you want to, especially if you're thinking long term. However - saving money isn't the only reason for straight shaving. For many I guess it is a kind of hobby and form of relaxation.

yup. I started this hobby because my beard mangles Mach 3s in two shaves. But 4 strops, 6 hones, 29 straights, 40 shaving soaps later........I'm not sure I'm saving too much! :)Quote:

Is it possible to rub Rogaine on your face to make your beard grow faster so you shave more often therefore making the expense of this "hobby" worth the investment? I'm getting into straights because I live in the Philippines and after 2 years of using crappy dbl edge safety razor blades my razor broke and I had to buy a disposable razor again... UGH! Nothing like a cheap razor to remind you why you stopped using them to begin with.

Yesterday I picked up a J. Schneider & Co. Peoria Ills. "The Peoria" that I have fell in love with. It says Made in Germany & with a quick run on the Koken Strop, it did everything a great straight is supposed to do. Shaved like a dream. I can't say enough good about this razor! I will never buy a modern razor unless I or a friend build it. Why bother when you can get a great shave for around $20.00? I have been really happy with all my vintage blades. The Hamilton took a little more work on the Work Sharp & Barber hone but it shaves great now.
