I was looking at razors on srd.com and saw the basic $80 dovo. Anything would be better than the disposable straight I use. But would it be better to go with a higher end dovo, or is this one good? I just want a good stra8 experience.

That will work fine. If you do not have a strop, i would look at their sets.
I think thats a great starting point for you man. Dovo is a nice name and getting it from srd will ensure its been honed to perfection. But let me ask you, have you looked on the classifieds yet? My first blade was 40 dollars from a member name hi bud gl, and i still go back to it again and again
My first razor was the Dovo Best Quality blonde 5/8. It is a good razor, but when I upgraded to the Dovo Bismarck 6/8, the difference was unbelievable. The Bismarck gives a much better shave imo.
I've not met a dovo that's a bad shaver.
i just got one a few weeks ago and mine was not honed by lynn just a out of the box dovo honed basic. stroped it up and she shaved like a champ.tell you what thou in the classifieds abought page 4 you will find 11/16 Swedish Eskilstuna Rex SHAVE READY from NOS

i was lucky to get one of thesekiller shavers for 65 bucks brand new.
either way you come up a winner
Well, I have shaved with the Best Quality, and own a Bismarck. The Bismarck has more flex, and comparing a 5/8 to a 6/8 is a bit like comparing apples and oranges. If I were on a budget, I would get the 6/8 Best Quality with the 3" strop, and some high quality cream. That should get you going.
Got the 6/8 and the 3inch strop from SRD, both work well go ahead and get your cream there as well and enjoy free shipping.
salazch,
How do pronounce that, by the way?
I'm breaking new ground here as I believe this may be only the second time I've agreed with BeBerlin, :ybut his is sound advice. I have a similar razor, the 6/8 Special which is a bit more expensive, but it's one I'll never get rid of.
:beer2:
My dear Salazch,
I second BeBerlin's thoughts. There will be time for other razors. For now, the 6/8" Best Quality Dovo is a good option. It is indeed a quality razor at a good price. Also, it will come honed by Lynn.
Also, I suggest calling Lynn directly at SRD and seeking his advice as well. The noble Lynn will put you on the right path. Good luck, and welcome to the world of gentlemen shavers. I assure you, sir, you will not regret it.
I suggest, however, to have patience and take your time.

Obie
I have the $80.00 Dovo and I have the Hi end Dovo's they all shave really good if I were you I would get the $80.00 Dovo and go from there.
As newbie I have a $80.00 DOVO and a Bismark both 6/8 both honed by Lynn. The $80.00 Dovo shaves very well I use it more then the Bismark. If you get either one as long as its honed by Lynn you can't go wrong. It will be shave ready no questions about it. But do buy a strop and go easy with
it, thats where I still have a lot of learning to do.
wow. so Lynn takes calls directly? wow.
Salazch,
I have a warm place in my heart for the Dovo Best razors :)
It was the first razor I bought when I got back into straight shaving, and it remains one of my favourite blades. They are so easy to maintain & touch up, and shave very well.
They are a great razor to learn on, and being well priced, are also a good razor to make mistakes on !
Mine has had all the usual stropping mistakes, had its edge bent on the sink, was the razor I learnt the basics ( and mistakes !!) of honing on etc, and has come through it all.
A good choice :)
Best of luck !
have fun !
regards
Russ
My dear Salazch,
Lynn helped me a great deal at the beginning. The man knows his stuff. He is also kind and generous. You cannot go wrong with Lynn's advice. Good luck.

Obie
Dovo yes or Dovo no, I'm still intrigued by how one might attempt to pronounce salazch.
Get the Tortoise Shell one. Apparently it is one of their best carbon steel blades so.
I like my Dovo Best Quality - but if you have the $$ why not get something nicer?
As for the strop, you'll definitely need one. You might even consider the Filly from RupRazor. You'll probably nick the first strop as you learn and the Filly is cheap enough you won't have to worry about it.
