Cleaning a Dovo's pivot area

Apologies for resurrecting an old threat but its most applicable here.

I have a Dovo Straight Razor, simple one with white plastic handle. After only a month of use, every second day, it has rust at the rivet holding the blade to the handle. It is only visable on the underside of the handle and nothing on the blade or tang itself.

Now it came to me as a surprise as I always dry the whole razor well and place oil on the blade, granted I should have been oiling this rivet too. Now I really want to clean it well but its in a difficult spot. Can I seperate the blade from the handle easily then reassemble it? What would be best to clean it as it seems to have attached itself to the plastic handle very well.

All suggestions appreciated.

Welcome to SRP! You can remove the pin, clean the area and re-pin the razor if you like and have enough experience to do so. You may want to practice on a razor of lesser value first though. You may also want to try using dental floss and some metal cleaner like Maas, Flits or the like. Good luck.

The biggest key here is to NOT get water on the scales at all if possible.

What Joe said with the floss and the metal polish worked well for me. IOW, if you don't want to risk unpinning and repinning the razor.

Thank you all for your advice. Do any of you have a link to a site showing how to remove the pin and then re-pin? In the mean time I'll try the dental floss and metal cleaner.

I've had good results cleaning the pivot area with pipe cleaners (the bristle kind) that are available at smoke shops. You can even use mineral oil lightly on the pipe cleaner to help dissolve some of the accumulated crap
in that area.

The best practice here is avoid this buildup so you won't have to do the cleanup.

I had this same problem with a Dovo Bismarck. I tried cleaning it with metal polish and thread but didn't help. Depending on the level of corrosion you'll likely have to re-pin it to prevent further damage.

If rust is visible by the pivot I would wager that the pivot hole on the blade itself is corroded too.
