Thanked: 530Testing the grinds... Any ideas?
So, Ladies and Gents... I have fallen into a completely normal predicament... I currently have a Dovo 5/8, a TI 6/8 (ish) and a Gold Dollar that is either 6/8 or 13/16. So far, I like the quality of the Dovo and the TI most, but the weight of the GD/TI most... However, even though I know I prefer heavier grinds, I don't know where my preference box cuts off..
I'll make this short... Is there any way you guys know of that I can try out a 7/8ths, and an 8/8 short of buying one? Possibly a 9/8 too.
I know the obvious answer would be contact a member near me and see if they'd let me try one of theirs, but I was wondering if there were other ways... I personally can't think of any, but maybe someone has experience.
Thanks, Gents and Lasses!
Cheers,
Jeremy

What exactly are you looking to try full Hollow 8/8 full wedge 8/8?

Thanked: 530I was thinking that was my best bet... But I'm in the man's hair so much that I figured if anyone knew of barber's that let people do stuff like this, I'd pester them before putting more bootprints on his floor
Well, I only have hollows, myself, and I'm liking them, But mostly I just want some more experience... I'm leaning away from wedges on a personal/aesthetic basis, but otherwise, I just want to do some learning...

Thanked: 530I've never actually talked to/visited Don except to pick up my Bridle strop... Although that might be a possibility. Thanks, Dylan

I don't want to speak for Lynn but there is a reason he started this siteAs far as barbers. Most don't use there real straights anymore, but (by law in most areas) use the replaceable blade straights. So the chance of getting a barber to let you use one of there straights is probably slim.

Thanked: 530Well I know that Ohio is one of the few places barbers can use real straights, and I know that there is a barber nearby in Canton (I met him at Lynn's, go figure)
It's not that I think he would dislike the request... I just dislike asking so much of him, even if he doesn't mind... I guess I just dislike asking to play with his stuff when I have nothing to offer in return... I feel a little guilty... I always get like that, over everything

if it were me i'd try goose with three olives, i think that has the best chance on him? for don it's gotta be scotch.
in any case consider how uncommon these razors are and then how much money they go for and the chance of finding a practicing barber who uses one of them are pretty slim. best bet is to just find the barbers near you who use straight razors and call to ask if they happened to have a big razor and whether they can shave you with it, or let you shave yourself.
personally i've been going the buy it route for almost any razor i fancied. just one (tiptle) i borrowed from a friend first.
actually there were 4 more that i tried at the ny meeting last fall - joed and lynn/don were generous to let me give them a spin.
