Thread: Wade and Butcher Question

I have a barber notch blade that is marked Wade and Butcher For Barbers Only. No Sheffield and slightly different verbage than the one I am familiar with i.e. "For Barber's Use".

Does anyone have any info on this verbage? Does this indicate a specific timeframe, place of manufacture other than Sheffield, etc?

I've had a couple like that come and go. Basically identical to the barbers use on the tang in terms of overall size, notch and scales. My guess is they rethought the "only" verbiage and decided "use" would sell more razors. Barbers only could have made a non barber think he couldn't buy it. Only a guess though and not even an educated guess.

I'd say that makes sense, and that would also make it a late 19th century made razor(I think). From a marketing view, it would make sense to put "for barbers use" rather than "barbers only" because the average guy might think it would be different from the razor he us used to, or might be geared more toward repeated use and honing and might not be the best choice for using a few times a week or so.

Either way they're great razors, and seemingly less common than the "barbers only" model.

Barber's use razors were made 1840-1900
Meat chopper blades 1830-1880.
Wade & Butcher "For Barbers Only" is a Meat chopper.
So, the razor was made 1840 - 1880.

Wade & Butcher "For Barbers Only" - this indicates that razor was made in Sheffield by W & B.
