You might look at the Dovo Jubilaum 3/8 Anniversary razor. It's overall about a fourth smaller than a traditional straight. A little hard to find. RoyalShave.com has them, as does Amazon (through Royalshave).
Here's a couple pics of mine; the top is a typical 5/8 standard straight so you can compare the overall size:
That dovo looks okay, but I see plenty of problems still.
I don't like the idea of the shavette, on a one year hike it would be no better than a gilette in my eyes, Regardless of how well it shaves, It's just not what I am after.
I use an old Antoni Tadross when I travel, wether in the civilized world or elsewhere. I also take a favorite soap, a cheap tweezerman brush, an old strop and a barber hone. Its all good. If rust were a concern take a small bottle of any decent oil or get a stainless blade.
If you can be more specific about the "problems" with the little Dovo, you may get better input.
I wonder why you don't just use a DE? I can get a totally acceptable WTG shave with a DE and water only. Then your kit is as small as the smallest DE you can find, and they come quite small.
I was curious about what the problems were with the little Dovo too--it's a bit longer than 3" OAL, but it's the smallest functional straight razor I've found except the Livi that costs $300! Any straight will require also some kind of strop.Quote:

i know people can get shaves just as close as a straight with proper technique.. unless you are hellbent on sticking with straights for travel.. i really think this would be the way to go..

You made a brief mention to a livi initially, For someone not well versed, it takes a bit of time to find things when this forum uses so many abbreviations, Ti, de, xtg, atg... They are not always obvious to us beginners...
You will notice also I said nearly a perfect size, but regardless
It was a worthy recommendation, it is close to what I would be looking for if I had limited time to choosse.
