Do you prefer simple elegance or something that really makes a statement?
In the same vein, do you prefer modern looks or that antique look?
My second razor is a Dovo Astral. It has ebony wood scales. Nice Razor!!
If you want something with class and yet not bling, this one is very nice (I´ve been looking at the pics many times :) ):
Vintage Samuel Osborn Mushet Special Steel Straight Razor#
Then you have the new model from Wacker, those are very nice, or something custom, like Buddel in Germany or something from the American manufactors. Many blades out there. And of course you can allways look in the classifieds here ...
Check out the vendors who advertise here at SRP. They have both vintage, custom and new straight razors that you may find to your liking. If you are new to straight razor shaving, I would recommend that you get a classy looking new razor. Perhaps a Dovo "Special" or "Renaissance." That way if something happens to it, you can always replace it.
Once you get the hang of things, then you can move to vintage razors. After all, no straight razor shaver can get by with just one razor.
Carbon or Stainless Steel?
@jms: simple elegance and antique look
@jeffegg2: nice razor, but im looking for a lighter tone of wood
@Mikael: thanks for the reccomendations, they look great. what are the price ranges for straight razors?
@jhenry: thank you for the advise =)
@jbcohen: stainless steel
How much do you want to spend? Remember the other goodies you need to get. My first was a Dovo With ebony scales carbon steel.
hmmm, well now im thinking maybe i should by an inexspensive one atleast until I get some extra cash to buy a nice one
Consider checking out SRD...Straight Razor Designs...they have strop/razor sets...I purchased a 3" Red Latigo with linen and a Dovo Best Quality Blond (plastic scales though) for right at $160...honing is out of my league right now to be honest. Have you decided to bo with a bowl and brush for your lather?...what kind of soap?...these too can get pricey. I use a Van Der Hagen brush/bowl and VDH soap as well. I'd rather spen money on a good blade and get the technique down first before sinking serious coinage into the brush/bowl/soap.
I recommend one of the Dovo inox designs some of them are very classy.
wow thanks for all the info guys, I plan on learning to shave with just water. sounds crazy but thats the mission.
Hey, i can understand not wanting to spend more money on creams/soaps etc. but unless your shaving only stubble i don't recommend the water only. If you have naturally oily skin before you shave only a slight irritation may result but if your shaving more than twice a week and/or with a beard it's just not comfortable! plus the soaps smell awesome feel even better and are just plain good...it like yin and yang man
:soapbox:
I too would discourage that approach...water only sets you up for alot of unnecessary misery...it might come off as not giving the entire process (the soap is part of the beard prep process) a fair shake when the entire process wasn't properly evaluated. I hope that whatever you decide works out to your satisfaction. I'm having a blast with my Dovo Best and I really can't imagine fully enjoying it without the lathering up and letting the soap do it's job. If you've ever done the "water only" approach with the plastic then you'll know where I am coming from. Good luck with whatever choice you make. Rich.
thanks for looking out for me guys. I got a few reasons why i only want to use water, one being that ive always used just water and it seems like my skin has gotten used to it. Its not that i dont want to spend money on the extra accesories, I just dont want to rely on the stuff. I guess you can say I wanna more natural way of shaving. I use fresh spring water when I shave instead of tap because of all the crap in the public water system.
no problemo...from what I've experienced to date, the folks in this forum are a really great bunch...really helpful and eager to share what they know so you can get to great shaves as quickly and as easily as possible...one question though, have you done your "water only" shaving with your regular razor?...if so, any big issues?...that might go a long way towards helping you determine your course...
i can recommend an entry level Thiers Issard, like a Le Dandy. Great shaver and great value for money.
cheers,
juko
@juko: thanks juko i'll check it out
@certifiedbodyman: yup I only use water with this crappy regular plastic razor, and I dont have any irritation. Its time to upgrade to something classier though, and I love the idea of learning how to use an old fashioned single blade razor to get the job done.
using the str8 is a blast...I am by no means experienced with less than two weeks of shaving with the str8 but I can tell you I'm having a blast using it...hoodathunk that shaving could be fun again...if you get a good shave withthe el cheapo plastics, I can only imagine the good shaves you'll get withthe str8 once you learn the blade and get your processes worked out, with or withou soap...best of luck
