What size razor do I have?

I've been using a straight razor for a few weeks now, and I'm glad I made the switch. Despite the first shave being a disaster, I now find my morning ritual something to look forward to.

Anyhow...

I purchased a mid-grade razor from ClassicShaving.com, a Dovo model 1516 with faux tortoise shell scales. I specified a size 5/8 blade, but measuring from the cutting edge (sharp tip) to the top of the spine I read 6/8-th of an inch.

QUESTIONS: Do I correctly interpret the blade size to be in fractions of an inch? Did I measure the size correctly?

I have no objection if the order was incorrectly filled, as I’m used to what I have. Just curious.

The measurements are in fractions of an inch. However I personally wouldn't complain since it is my opinion that being in the middle, size-wise, the 6/8 is perfect to start with. It also saved you a little money since the wider razors usually cost a little more. Congratulations!

Different makers measure differently - some from bevel tip to top of spine, others from bevel tip to underside of the spine (the shoulder).

I have the same 5/8 Dovo Special. Mine measures 5/8 from the edge to the part of the spine that touches the hone, and 9/16 + about 1/32 from the edge to the top of the spine.

My 6/8 Dovo Best Quality measures 6/8 + about 1/32 from the edge to the part of the spine that touches the hone, and about 3/32 less than 7/8 from the edge to the top of the spine.

I've handled several Dovo 5/8 & 6/8 razors - and I suspect that a width variation of about 1/32 is standard since they are hand-ground.

For what it's worth, I like the way the 5/8 shaves better for daily shaves when both are equally sharp. The 6/8 is much easier to strop, and stays sharp a bit longer. The 5/8 gets the hollows of my cheeks, chin and neck more automatically and results in a little closer shave. The weight of the 6/8 is a little easier to use if I didn't shave over the weekend.

Is it possible you have a slightly taller blade? If so, great! You'll benefit from getting a feel of other blades and grinds. I started w/ a 5/8 full hollow stainless Dovo & the flex in the blade kicked my tail until I gained more experience. I tried a 6/8 1/4 hollow and thought I was in heaven. It's still my fav. blade, but with a bit of practice, I found that little Dovo gives me a great shave also. Skills improved, blades that were a challenge are now a pleasant taste of variety. That you're able to use the blade with some degree of comfort only means you're well on your way. But now the danger lurks behind every click of the mouse. The dreaded ADs :). Symptoms begin with a tapeworm in your wallet...

Good choice, Antenna. I have a 1516 and regard it as an excellent modern interpretation of a classic German 5/8 full hollow. And it is a 5/8: measured from the spine arris to the edge. The overall width of the blade is indeed getting on for 3/4", but it's the hollow which counts.
