Default Do you store your razors with a pack of silica/dessicant gel?

I've been keeping the small packs of silica gel that I get from various purchases to control the humidity around my razors. I have found them in shoe boxes, Japanese rice crackers, tinned cookies, chocolates and basically anything where moisture could harm the products. Well I thought why not stick a pack or two in my 7 day straight razor box. I also keep a pack lying on my dresser and after my daily shave, I'll dry off my razor and place right on top of the pack of silica gel. By doing this I believe the silica removes all the moisture that may still be sitting on the edge of the blade and in the tiny crevasses of my razors. Does anyone else do this? Any thoughts?

i do not do this.. but it should be noted that you can purchase these packets.. rather than have to force japanese crackers down your throat.

    Cool

it is much easier, and more reliable to just give it a coating of mineral oil...

How do you know when the descant needs re-charging? They only work for so long.

I like Japanese crackers! Well I replace every few months. We have so many of these kicking around. I use oil too on my straight razors but I don't use oil on my safety razors.

I do it. Every time I see a nice thin silica pack I snatch it up. Where can you buy them?

Cool I'm glad I'm not the only one. I never buy them. I'm conservative so I look for them for free! If you are really inclined most flower nurseries will sell it in a tub but it's not cheap. They sell it so that people can use the dessicant gel to dry out flowers while maintaining their colors and look. Alternatively, I bet you can go to a shoe store and ask them for a few packs from their empty shoe boxes.

    haha. ok.. enjoy your crackers..

i'm unsure what the link was.. but they are very inexpensive.. somewhere in these forums is a member who placed a toothbrush holder inside of a glass jar with several of these packets.. i believe it housed 4 or 5 straights comfortably.

i store my small collection of razors in an old-fashioned tin lined with silica gel packs. seems to work well.

I recommend using ones recovered from packages of jerky. They keep the razors dry and rust free, plus give them that nice beefy aroma.
