I've cut a new towel when wiping a razor. My wife told me she'll throw all my razors if I do it again!
Now that you mention it, I have a specific towel I had on hand when honing. Going from one grit to the next or at least once during the final pass I lightly stroke the razor edge across the towel...very light. If there is a wire hair hanging at the blade edge, the towel will grab it and remove it before it comes off and gets under the blade edge during honing and causes a small "scar" along the polished edge. That's just me, and other my agree or disagree.
Too lazy to go all the way back to the kitchen and find the bloody vegetable-peeler, I just used a straight-razor to shave a carrot I was eating...
