    Default WILLIAM HOGARTH etching, year 1738, "London by night" - antique shaving

    I found this etching in Moscow museum. Etching by W. Hogarth "London by night". In the bottom left corner printed "Invented Painted Engraved & Published by Wm Hogarth March 25. 1738, according to Act of Par"





    Any idea about the razor?

    An old barber once told me the Barber's Pole represented the trades of the Barber which were bloodletting, dentistry and grooming. Here is a link w/ more history behind it and probably a bit more accurate.

    Interesting - looks like the barber is shaving and bleeding the guy at the same time too...
