Thanked: 0Good buy?
Hey all,
I'm relatively new to purchasing and shaving with a straight razor and last night I came across what I thought was a steal on ebay. I impulse bought the razor for a little under $60 including shipping and handling. It is a Solingen Extra Hollow Ground, "Fully Warranted". Please let me know what you think.

The razor looks fine--except for some rust along the tang. You can remove that with some MAAS metal polish.
See if you can shave with it. You will most likely need to get it professionally honed, though. So you can add another $20 - $22 dollars to your cost."Age is an issue of mind over matter. If you don't mind, it doesn't matter." Mark Twain

Thanked: 0Yes I was figuring on spending about $20 for professional honing. Do you still think that paying $60 for it was a good find?

Thanked: 275"Valuations" are prohibited here, so nobody's going to give you a straight answer.
Check the "Classifieds" on this site, find a similar razor in similar condition. Unlike the one you bought, it will probably be 'shave-ready'.
Add your honing cost to your eBay cost, compare it to the Classified's price. That will give you a good idea of what _somebody else_ (the seller) thinks a razor like yours should sell for.

PS -- the Classifieds are aimed at a fairly sophisticated audience. Buyers and sellers both have a pretty good idea of what something will sell for.

Yep, I almost bit on that one myself... I didn't pull the trigger , only because I have to many on the work bench right now...Looks like that one just needs a touch up though.
