The SRP Database...

As a new member and recent RAD victim, I have been wondering lately why there aren't more razors being added to the database all the time? I've found it to be very useful while trying to identify razors that I find at antique stores or wherever but it seems like there should be more than 3 entries so far this year. Perhaps I misunderstand how it works, because of the handful of razors I have aquired I think two are actually in the database. For such an excellent tool it seems highly underused. <---is that a word? Anyway, I was thinking I would submit some of my blades to the database but I have a few concerns... 1) my razors have not been restored and therefor are not in pristine "razor model" shape, however that doesn't seem like it should matter. 2) I'm new. I don't really know what I'm talking about. I cut myself. My lather looks like warm soupy whipped cream. And my strop looks like I tried to cut it in half a few times. I'm not sure I'm exactly qualified for the job. 3) sometimes I'm not sure if the stamp on the tang is the manufacturer or the vendor who sold the manufactures blade.

So set me straight pun intended. Do I dive in and ruin the database or do I I just stare at the main database page waiting for someone to add my razors so I can yell in a fit of joy "SWMBO! Look! There's my razor! Hehehe!"

Underused is a word.

There are a couple of reasons that you don't see more entries:
1. It takes time and effort - not a lot of people are willing to do it.
2. The user integration is broken - if you don't already have priveleges, you need to request to be manually added. The best way to do that is with a post in the site help / comments / suggestions area.

If you want to add some stuff, send me a PM and I'll get your account set up for it.


As to the condition of the razors - restored or unrestored doesn't matter as long as they are in an unaltered state.
So for restorations - take the rust off, clean them, etc... If you change scales or hardware, then don't put them in the database. We want manufacturer original stuff.

Well, Ferret-Face, (you need to change your avatar to you lathering with the ferret. Yes, the baby is cute!) You can post it with photos in the "razors" forum. Some smarty-pants will tell you allll about it! Seriously, I feel a tutorial on how to do this is in order. I have lots of info provided by Neil Miller, Manah, and others in my posts. Some with awesome detail. I would like to take a rainy day and add them to the database. We need a way to discern if our added info is correct. Or at least as correct as we know collectively. That should be stressed as criteria.
We have a resource, let's add to it. Perhaps someone in the know would look at it on occasion and make corrections if needed. Perhaps this is already being done. I, for one, am very interested.

Feel free to add it. If it's not original we'll just delete it and ban you from SRP for life.

Just put it in with a notation that you're not sure if it's all original.
If someone comes along that knows for sure - one way or the other - they can edit the entry.
That's the beauty of a wiki - anyone can make corrections. In my opinion, it's better to get them in there and edit as needed vs. not putting them in at all.

This is exciting because part of the fun for me is the history. Somebody should pin Neil down and extract everything he knows from his brain and put it in the wiki. But not only him an the other historians, everyone who owns an old razor has something to contribute. I agree there should be a tutorial. All of us search that database and I know I'm not the only one who is slightly disappointed when I find that a rather common razor isn't even in the database.

A tutorial on how to do what exactly? Add a razor to the wiki database, or add pictures to the razor forum or something else?
