Interesting chip, and they are a challenge to take out, all I can do is try, I would take it very slow on the 2x72 and a bucket of water :p and hope I don't hear the dreaded PING !!!!!
Do ur best!! Its useless this way anyways..
Will do
I will post pics here as it goes :)
I've seen a Puma that buddy fixed up, this looks like the same thing could be done to it. I'd love to see this made into an Irish point! What are the plans for this? I would hate to see it get squared off. Even a softer french point would look nice.
I passed off to gssixgun I'm.still learning, think.i just figured out stropping next honing then restores!!
On razor restoration it is a fallacy to think that you can "Plan" oh you might have an idea in the back of your mind but the razor decides not you... :(
Using your idea for one second on this... Look at the crack,, now think for a second, how a French/Irish/Obilique point works out,,, That would require the most grinding instead of the least grinding.... The more grinding you do the more likely something bad is going to happen...
Right now my "plan" is to try and make it back into a RP, perhaps a bit more squared like a DOVO has, but when it gets here I will use a Magic Marker and see what idea/path loses the least steel in the process, ie: which will be the safest route...
I'm excited to see the result of this.
No pressure Glenn but I'm expecting magic!
Michael
I am subscribing to this thread I want to see how this one is going to turn out. Sorry about your razor Airportcopper, that had to have sucked.
Also subscribing. I love seeing how razors with this type of damage is saved. I have a razor that has a crack near the heel that I have been far to afraid to grind out so far. Maybe one day I won't be such a coward and just go for it.
I usually take these pics so I can get an idea of what would need to be ground away to achieve a look, keep in mind the longer you grind the higher the risk goes, also the more metal that get ground off the spine, the more the razor will show the repair..
Restoration uaually becomes a balancing act, between what you want, and what the razor wants to give up...

Where the black Magic Marker is, shows the steel that has to be ground off,, the length of the edge right now is 2 5/8 inches it was probably a 3" edge to start maybe 2 7/8"
Round looks good to me !
I'll use a 2x72 and grind on the platen first to get rid of the bad section, then move off the platen to use the belt slack and some Gymnastics to add the curve...
Keep your fingers crossed
I know that Glenn will have that looking new and natural.. either way I think it just became a Dubl Duck Dwarf. Not that there's anything wrong with that.
Yea really not losing that much of the metal with going with the round tip.. so it will look almost original.. see what happens there is always risk when grinding especially this type anything to save a great shaver ill b happy with!! It really is an art
I love to see 'magic' I know that Glen will do his best, but as he says there's always the chance of hearing that dreaded 'PINGGGGG'!
I can hardly wait to see what my friend comes up with!:)
Wow thats a heinous chip my man. Good thing Glen is on the case!
Used an 80 grit belt to do the heavy work then switched to a 320 to gently kiss the edge meet up
Polished out on 600 grit greasless then polished back to shine so that there are no rough edges...
Edge length after fix = 2 5/8" exactly what it got here with, so Frank lost zero edge length with going with the original Round Point look

Now, you're just showing off. ;) Great work, Glen. Amazing!
'Just amazing, Glen. This and a heavy Helje you did last year just boggle my head. I'm betting the owner is ready to name his first 3 kids after you. Both of these were so worth the effort & you did 'em proud.
It seems that Glen wants us to believe that he does this great work all by himself. :nono:
....well I know the secret,,,, now we all know it !!
This mysterious beacon has been spotted over Sandpoint, Idaho on more than one occasion. :w
