Just got it and needs opinion
Hello all,
I just bought this Straight razor in an antique store and paid $ 10.00 for it.
I' completely new to straight razor and i need some suggestions in regard to it.
This straight razor needs work because is not sharp and I cannot shave it with it.
My question is: is it worth it to have someone hone it? Is this a decent straight razor for a beginner?
I'm located in California and if it is worth it to have someone hone it for me do you guys know of anyone able to do it?
Please advise.
Thank you in advance.

Is that a wester brother manganese steel razor?

I would say it's worth honing. You can send it away to get honed a lot cheaper than buying a new one. Should be around $20-$30. Besides, it's a nice razor.

Yeah then it is. I've got one and they are fantastic shavers. Definitely worth having it honed. That's really a very good blade.

Do a forum search for wester brothers anchor brand. I think you'll be pleasantly surprised.

There are several excellent videos on the site about stropping. Also look up the thread called "stroptober" tons of videos and good information.
You can kill the edge of a good razor stropping badly, so watch carefully and pay close attention to technique. Maybe practice with a butter knife until you feel natural at it. That way you won't harm your razor or your strop.

Just as long as the leather isn't rough or cracked you should be fine.
There are places you can order a fairly cheap starter strop if you're worried about that one.
If you haven't already, read the wiki of this site. There is just tons of great information there.
