Hi All,

Made a really silly beginner's mistake. I was rinsing my week old straight razor over the sink and accidentally bumped the blade against the faucet. The blade (near the heel, shiny part of the edge on the picture) has a ding in it. My question is whether I need to send it out to get honed again or whether I can just keep shaving with it? I tried stropping it with no change (30 round trips on linen, 70 on my synthetic leather strop from the Well Shaved Gentleman :-) ). I have been having a lot of difficulty regardless as this is my first straight razor so I'm not sure that I would be able to "feel" if there is a problem. Thanks.

If you notice the dinged section scratching your strop, at all, then send it out for a fast repair.

It looks like something I would not attempt to shave with.

Some guys might opt to try it and see.

It really boils down to how much experience you have. That said, I would suggest that inexperienced shavers would do well to never try to use questionable edges (and thus avoid the frustration of not knowing if your bad shave is a result of technique or equipment), and experienced shavers often know how to repair these things (or have spares to use while its out for repair). Either way, most won't benefit from questionable edges.

The good news is that its not a major amount of damage and it will hone out fairly easily.

Where are you? Perhaps a member is close by and can help you out?

You can keep shaving with the front 2/3 of the razor. but seriously I'd get it honed.
For me it would be like driving a car with a sparkplug not firing.

I razor with a ding in the edge is a recipe for a rash or a really unpleasant shave. I'd get it fixed. i did the same thing once and wish I had fixed it right away.

As Oz said, it needs honed. You said that you were having problems enough as it was so please don’t complicate things.
