I picked up this razor yesterday:

The sellers is from eastern Europe.
His grandfather stole it from a German Offices while imprisoned in Auschwitz during WWII.
It's been stored in the box ever since.
I paid 35 pounds.
Don't know much about razors, did I get a good deal?
There's some pitting on both sides. Not sure if I should have a go with wet 1k paper or leave it as is.

Seems like a decent razor and in good condition, though I don't buy the story accompaning it. I don't recall the last time I saw someone selling family heirlooms of Holocaust survivors.:hmmm:

Yeah I highly doubt the story. It's probably total BS. But nice razor. I have a Henckels and it's pretty nice, although I have yet to get it to shave well (just honed it up a bit, so it should shave good now, I just haven't tried it yet).

Well it's a shame the story behind my first old(er) razor doesn't check out.
Sod it.
I spend a couple of hours working on it and I'm well pleased with the results.
Worked on it with 80, 120, 320, 600, 1k and 2k paper and gave it a final polish with some paste.
All the pitting is gone and it looks pretty much new.

My norton 1k + 4/8k stones are arriving in a couple of weeks.
I'll report back on how well it shaves then.

At the very least it cleaned up real well. Good luck with the honing, I'll bet it will be a sweet shaver.

I do a lot of work on knives but never attempted to restored a razor before.
I'm chuffed with how it turned out.
If anyone can tell me more about this razor I'd appreciate it.
Looking at prices for J A Henckels razors I think I may have got a reasonable deal after all (holocaust missing) :)

the seller just told me he found 2 J A Henckels razors after rummaging in the attic
one has the 1810 and the other the 1850 mark
