Thread: What do you recommend as a step up razor?

I would really consider a "custom razor" from one of the fine razor makers right here on the forum. There are some seriously talented artisans here.........

Am a junior memeber here but my 2 cents:
My first SR shave was a vintage Boker half hollow, followed by a vintage E.A. Berg half hollow. Liked them both. Next up was a Soligen blade that looked like a wedge, didnt like the feel but it shaved well.
Then I got lucky and landed a W&B faux Frameback and a Bengall. Both were better than anyhting I had used to date.

I am telling you all this because my next shave was using a modern Dovo.... personally it was a step backwards. It shaves it feels ok on the face but when comparing to any vintage razor it came up second best.

Now iam am only using a John Barber, Tfaux frameback W&B, the vintage Boker, my Bengall or a Joseph Rodgers & Sons... if I were you...go vintage! best shaves IMHO.

Buy anything that is different from what you currently have. You've got a hollow ground spike? So try a 1/4 hollow roundpoint. Or a half hollow French point. Or a full wedge with a barbers notch. Or a double jimped, double shouldered, faux frameback with a ring tang, spine fluting, stainless steel, with a corkscrew and a bottle opener attached. What I'm getting at is: You should just pick something that looks like something you want to try. And try it. Nobody can tell you what car to buy, what house to buy, what brand of soda to drink, or what razor to buy. This is your hobby my friend.

What you should NOT buy is far more important. The list is fairly short, and easily discovered using the Google search function at the top right of your SRP screen.

I have to agree with most of what I see above. Take a walk on the wild side or play it somewhat safe, just try something new. I have yet to meet a straight I didn't like. Just some more than others.

If it were me I'd go for something different. Different grind, either hollower or stiffer would be the simple choice. For hollower grind I guess the Berischer Löwe if you want to stay with Dovo (I very much like them), for stiffer I'd go with a fun vintage (those from Sheffield are abundant, but RedImps are not hard to find either).
