Just as a follow up, it was as suspected: the blade had been heated to such a degree that the temper was destroyed. It absolutely refused to take an edge.

The blade is pretty warped, and I think the heat has screwed up the blade's temper. I think I'm going to sand and polish it up, just to see how it looks with the heat discoloration.
