The slate on the back of the newer coticules is not really useless,
it just often has impurities.
One vendor in germany sells it on its own.
It does hone. you just never know what kind of grain... -

Its too hard for a coticule.
Just tried to raise some slurry, but to no avail.
You get the slurry of the bout but the hone gives nothing off.
Works well to use it with coti slurry though. -

Mine has no veins or other irregular structure and I guess once your's is lapped, it will look quite plain as well.... -
