If you've got soft water then it's pretty slippery all by itself. I shaved with water and a disposable for years when I was in college.

What type of soap were you using, hard or glycerine? Did you re-wet the lather on your face before starting to shave? I use hard soaps and definitely prefer lathering up before I strop.
