Most guys with tough beards (myself included)...
Most guys with tough beards (myself included) seem to go for stiffer grinds, the 1/4 or 1/2 grinds, and larger razors like 7/8 sizes. Frameback styles also work well for heavy beards.

I started straights because I have sensitive skin...
I started straights because I have sensitive skin and a tough beard. DEs worked ok but the blade flex was a real challenge, so I switched to straights for the heavier and stiffer blades.
