The 220/1K stone doesn't need nearly as much lapping as the 4K/8K. My 1K doesn't really wear much. I lapped it once when it was new with 220 grit sandpaper, and again after about two months...

I like to use my 1K Norton to maintain my 4/8K combo. I haven't noticed any improvement on the 8K side when I went to a 1500 or 2000-grit paper, but it's been a while. Maybe I should give it another...
