If the edge is not rolled, then you were stropping correctly, but if you have a load of tiny nicks in the edge it may be the case that the beslt you are using is not suitable for stropping.

That sounds like a good next step. Give it a good stropping (100 laps or something) and see if that brings the edge back!

Dont worry too much about the tests for sharpness like HHT, TPT and TNT....
