I'm surprised to hear that. I have the same hone and I find it's a very fast cutter, certainly on a par with the Chosera 1k.
The only thing I've noticed is it tends to glaze slightly faster than... -

Stones seem to work well in sets of the same make I've found, and I've heard the norton 1k is a great stone.

Another +1 for the 1k chosera here. I've not had mine long but so far I haven't had a blade it won't put a great bevel on.
Definately my favourite bevel setter! :)
