The idea is to hone it just every 2-3 months (or as needed) to restore the blade to a proper pre-stroping state.
I do not shave too often (once every 2 weeks) but I'm sure things will... -

I'll see if the local hardware store has a stone...
I'll see if the local hardware store has a stone with 4000-8000 grit. if not I can always pick up one online.
One stone is a lot less expensive than the whole set :D
