It actually works exceptionally well. I've done this using a turned and hollowed cocobolo blank rather than the acrylic and used curly walnut for the caps.

You have the inside diameter of the tube match the part which will be inserted. Much like a mailing tube.

Find someone with a lathe, have them turn some stylish end caps for you and use a piece of this acrylic tube (2.75" ID) to house your wonderful brush.
