I agree with the high magnification distraction, some edges look scary and shave well. I've seen old pits or dings, couldn't feel them on the shave. It can be overkill, nothing beats the shave test.

This pic says a LOT. Notice how the scratch marks fron the previous stone are present. Stones 1, 2, &4k are the foundation to a quality shaving edge. Pay attention to "stiction", this is how you feel...

I did approximately 20 strokes on a g20 and about 50 on escher y/g. I screwed the pooch on not having enough slurry on the escher. Bokers are known to be chippy. Should have done 5-10 x on the g20...
