Bandman, if it won't shave arm hair along the entire edge off the 4k, you need to keep on working the bevel. The 8K & 12K do more polishing to the edge than sharpening.

Personally I like the Japanese stones. I don't think you could go wrong with either, one of those Ford vs Chevy things on the lower grits. For the finishing stone, my vote is Nani all the way.
