Creams can be used in place of soaps, or along with them... It's up to the user... I mostly use creams, and some soaps, and I don't usually mix the two... So, yes, they can be used alone.

For travel, I just use cream, a coffee mug, a strop, a brush and a razor... Scuttles are really just luxuries

At home I use cream, or soap, a scuttle, and three strops >.<
