I am not a machinist at all and while I do have quality drills and taps, I only do simple things because I have no clue how to make sure that everything lines up etc.

If you can get square tubing etc, why not clamp and weld? In my experience bolting is much more difficult in terms of keeping things aligned. Plus bolts taps and drills cost money too.
