What i eventually did was to rub lather into it and wipe it off 2 or 3 times. A whole bubch of brownish crap seemed to keep coming off. I then layed it flat and squished... -

So it seems that saddle soap won't hurt it any. Or glycerine soap if I'm thinking of the same post as AFDavis ?
