Is it okay to leave certain sections un-lathered and dry for several minutes before applying a little water and lather to it, or do I have to re-prep that spot thoroughly before applying lather?

I have been using speick, nancy boy, and proraso so I don't think it is an issue with the products I am using. Most other soaps and creams I have used irritate my skin.
