I make my own,do not see any downside,I still use both types.Upside? perhaps a little more consistant as the tension always remains the same,They all work.

Thus the wisdom in using an X stroke while stropping,you can cover the entire edge even on a cupped strop.
Thats why I started using loom strops,cupping is not an issue.
