Yeah I would be against removing the etch and would most likely just get it honed, my guess is it was either dropped or maybe something landed on it, it has been in storage for many years.

Today I managed to find my great grandfathers razor. Turns out he had a S.B. Kahnweiler & Co, New York USA (thats what the tang says the other side has nothing). The Blade has Damascus Steel on it....
