That is one of the reasons, but as much extra time as it takes on the hard steel to get it up to par also translates to how well the edge holds up under use, at least from my experience.

There is some great steel from out that way, I have a few and love them, one from Little Valley takes the best edge of the bunch, sharp and smooth.
