The only imitation I've seen is horn with some form of dye/ink or whatever applied to the surface. The obvious difference when compared to real tortoiseshell is that the real stuff has has patterns...

I like the idea - I wonder how it would stand up to a bit of heat generation when drilling and buffing etc.

I'm nor dismissing the idea but do you think it would be markedly different to amber acrylic?
