The bottom line really is that it's your razor, so do whatever the heck you want with it!

I suspect the standard pin diameter has more to do with aesthetics than anything else. I'm sure a thicker...

With time the hole has become worn, and is now quite larger than originally intended. This happens to many, if not most, older razors. Most pins are 1/16" diameter, so to keep the blade from flopping...
