I should have clarified - I would be going down...
I should have clarified - I would be going down the pattern welded billet road, not smelting. I was nervous enough melting down some copper and aluminium in my forge. No way I'm stepping up to molten...

Different steels have different hardening...
Different steels have different hardening properties. The non-magnetic point (aka critical temp) is the point at which the steel is quenched either in oil, water, in air, or in some other magic goop....

That was my working theory, so I'm glad someone else had the same idea. In any case, heat treat will be a guessing game, not knowing the exact composition of any of the steels.

I'm very tempted to try making a pattern welded billet from some of the old blades I have kicking around that are beyond repair. I'll have to add that to the list of projects... :)
