I hardly ever use it and then only on the few wedges I run across that have heavy hone wear to see where I am at with bevel angles. It does work though if you have a need for it.

You measure the width of the blade from the apex of the edge to the top part of the hone wear, not the top of the spine itself. It is just that simple and it works.
