Another idea would be to fill the hole with the epoxy first, let that cure, then drill the appropriate size hole. :shrug:

That knot looks like it's not set to deep Ed. I'd take that hack saw and cut it right in half about 25mm from the top of the brass. Then just try and split the wood grain with a flat screw driver and...

I've used beet root juice for dying bowls I've turned on the lathe before. It works well and I'm willing to bet it would dye boar hair without a problem.
