Wood is far easier than plastic. You can split the handle in half along the grain. That being said, I've never done it on stabilized wood.

Rubber bumpers for your chuck would be the ideal way, but you probably don't have those. Even if you did, I'm not sure you could reverse chuck it to finish the bottom......

Your loft on that 30mm is probably a little on the higher side IMO. Not a bad thing. If it were mine, I'd shoot for around 54-55mm. -

So you might be able to drill it deeper and lower the loft a bit. That will set it deeper, and at the same time, fill out the hole. What's your intended loft?
