Practicing is a good thing. I still do that some of the time. Sometimes I'll buy a halfway decent razor off of eBay or somewhere and use it to practice honing. I keep some of them as travel razors...

Unless you trash the edge somehow, you may never need to set it again. You often hear of people maintaining their razor for years on nothing but a barbers hone.
