See even my first one has a 4"diameter and a 2.5"dept for the lathering bowl and the external diameter is about ~5.5". The second and third are about the same diameter but with a dept from 3-3.5"....

I thought of that before, but wide shallow and large reservoir equals a very large and clunky piece of clay. I do believe that 4" diameter is ideal.

@ twisted oak a wider shallower bowl will somewhat negate the heat retention feature. -
