Defiantly the best option is to find a mentor.

Using a DMT plate could do damage to the w&b . A learning curve that is maybe better learnt with a junk razor.

Possibly what I would try, having been in your position many times.

3 layers of tape, Dmt, rolling x ... 10 strokes one side and 10 on the other side, replete until rite to the edge or very near....
